Get ready for No Kings - Vote Early!

No Kings - Vote Early is LESS THAN TWO WEEKS AWAY (Sat, 10/18)! We are thrilled to learn about how many of our members have already cast their vote at their local Registrar’s Office.

Our rally is not just for getting people out on the 18th. It is also for getting the attention of the general public in the weeks leading up to Election Day.

If you have already voted, we’re glad that you have that weight off your shoulders. March with us along Park Avenue. Bring your friends. Bring your family. Heck, bring your neighbor. And make sure to bring a sign!

October Community Gathering

Our next community gathering will take place on Sunday, October 11th with representatives from the FreeDC Project. The residents of Washington, D.C. have been silenced by the federal government since the establishment of the Capitol, but they have not remained silent.

FreeDC heard about the Lynchburg Republican’s defunct firehouse primary back in June. They identified parallels between election interference in both cities, and now want to educate our members of how to counter voting manipulation.

They also aim to help us unseat John McGuire who has voted against D.C. statehood, supported Trump in his destruction of Capitol historical monuments, and encouraged militarization of the city since entering office.

We hope to see you at First Christian Church this Sunday at 4:00 PM!

Registration is optional, but encouraged. It helps us in planning ahead for how many volunteers we need and how much food to provide to our attendees. It also allows us to get important updates directly to you.

Spread the word! Voting Rights Restored!

Congratulations to the ACLU for winning their years-long lawsuit against the Commonwealth for revoking voting rights from every person convicted of a felony!

With the exception of murder, involuntary manslaughter, and voluntary manslaughter, completing a prison sentence for a felony in Virginia now means that you get to register to vote again!

If you know someone who has served prison time, don’t let them sit this election out. Share this good news, and help them get registered!

How to get involved during election season

We know, we know. Our last newsletter had this same piece. And it is important that all of our subscribers receive this information:

To have a city that works for the betterment of everyone, we need to put in the effort to have that representation on City Council. Let’s help Lynchburg Better Together fill their much-needed volunteer roles. There is a place for everyone in these efforts:

CANVASS: The number one way to increase voting power is by hitting the streets. Join LBT for group canvassing every Saturday morning. Bring a friend, or jump in on your own schedule! You can find the exact dates, times, and locations here: Canvassing Dates

HAND OUT SAMPLE BALLOTS: We need volunteers to hand out sample ballots for early voters, which is essential in local elections, especially with so many names on the ballot! Sign up for a shift ASAP here: Sample Ballot Sign Up

DELIVER STICKY NOTES or PHONE BANK: If you’re canvass-shy, no problem. Lynchburg Better Together is preparing to launch LBT Sticky Notes, which simply involves sticking an LBT info paper on doors…without talking to anyone!

PHONE BANKING: LBT has also organized another Phone Bank Party for Tuesday, 10/20 at 6 PM (801 Court Street). Please bring a laptop computer and head phones, if possible.

Donate! Every dollar helps Lynchburg Better Together spread the word through yard signs, canvassing, textbanks, and more. Click here to give.

Write a Letter to the Editor: Word of Mouth is what gets people to the ballot box. Letters to the Editor are a great way to get the word out. Whether discussing schools, small businesses, civil politics, Parks & Rec, or other topics, write down what you care about. Encourage Lynchburg to vote for our LBT candidates! Check out this recent letter for ideas!

Do you need a ride to vote? Let the LDC know at LDCRides.org. How you vote is your own business, but a need is a need.

Voter Transportation: Consider driving someone to the polls! You can share your availability with Devonne Robertson at msdevonne221@gmail.com. If you have a prefered Ward/Precinct to transport voters and preferred form of communication, please let her know that, too. Once voter requests come in, she will provide them with your contact information to coordinate the location, your available times, and when they need a ride. These are the dates and times that the Registrar’s Office is open between now and Election Day.

With so many opportunities to vote this season, we understand how easy it may be to put off voting. But Election Day will be here before we know it! Make sure to pick a day and time, mark it on your calendar, and commit to voting.

REMINDER!

If you plan for USPS to return your ballot close to Election Day, we encourage you to request a manual postmark in person from the Post Office.

According to USPS, recent changes to its transportation network mean some mail may not reach a processing center the same day it’s dropped off. That’s where most postmarks are applied. The date on your ballot could be later than the day you actually mailed it. Under those circumstances, there is a chance that your vote might not get counted. Manual postmarks are FREE and show the date USPS accepted your ballot at the counter.

Indivisible LYH encourages mail-in voters to personally hand deliver their ballots to the ballot dropbox outside of the Registrar’s Office at 825 Kemper Street. This is the most effective way to ensure that your vote gets counted.

We found the elusive John McGuire in the wild!

The College Republicans at Hampden-Sydney kicked off their rebooted campus club by hosting U.S. Representative John McGuire for a meet-and-greet Monday of last week. This was the closest that we have gotten to having a local town hall, so a half dozen of our members made the journey out to Farmville.

McGuire arrived late, took zero questions, and spent the better part of an hour boasting about his personal accomplishments. After urging these young men to knock doors for his campaign, he had the audacity to leave abruptly without answering a single question or taking a single photo.

We, on the other hand, politely listened to him in a non-combative manner, and were very disappointed (yet not surprised) by his sudden departure.

Before he sped off in his vehicle, we were able to catch him for one question upon which he dismissively told us to “call his office”.

We’re certain the H-SC students in the room had their own thoughtful questions about the issues that matter to them. But they never got the chance to ask them either.

Please share this story with undecided voters in your life. Help them to see that this man has never and will never stand with voters when it counts.
